Description

Do you fancy a pristine 12-bottle case of a 21st century Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux, ready to drink now with ages of its drinking window left, potentially for (just) under £1,000, duty and VAT paid?

Chateau Beychevelle is the finest property architecturally and agriculturally of the classified chateaux on the left bank but had something of a torrid time post-war, and was a bit unfashionable. It helped that Robert Parker said in the 1990s “Beychevelle’s wines can be as beautiful as its magnificent gardens” and helped even more maybe by deployment of a premier division viniculture team in the later nineties. The 21st century grand-vins are investment-grade wines scoring habitually in the mid 90s.

Provenance: According to auctioneers Bonhams, this case was bought en-primeur, held in a bonded warehouse where it remained until the purchaser’s death and then to Bonham’s bonded warehouse. I bought it from Bonhams, paid the VAT and duty and shipped it to my climate-controlled cellar.

Said cellar is full to the gunnels with more arriving so I need to cull its contents or else my sons will be giving away 40% of its value to the new King. That means drinking or selling and the doc. says the more I continue to do of the former the sooner His Majesty will be enriched from what remains.

Condition guarantee: I have described it as filled into the neck because I confidently expect they are, but I have not opened the case and thereby lose its untouched characteristic. So instead, I offer the successful bidder an option. If they choose, I will open the case, make a visual check (with photographs) and if it does not match the description the purchaser can call off the deal. I will even remove a cap to check the cork dates match if desired, but I am 100% sure they will.

The reserve is sensible with some upside left for the purchaser if they want to keep some or all of the case. The release price of new vintages is going up which tends to elevate the prices of drinkable back vintages in good fettle. If the reserve price is not reached, I will open the case, drink 2 or 3 bottles, and sell the rest in 2s and 3s over the next couple of years, expecting to achieve well into three figures per bottle, (last time I looked Crump Richmond & Shaw were selling the 2002 at around £125 a bottle, VAT and duty paid, and the 2001 on offer is a better vintage).
