Description

This 1982 is still displaying a beautiful deep ruby/purple hue as well as a stunning set of aromatics consisting of blue and black fruits, loamy earth, flowers, licorice, and spice box. The wine is medium to full-bodied with sweet tannins, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and a silky finish. It appears to have hit full maturity, but it can easily be held in a cold cellar for another 10+ years.
Score: 95 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (183), June 2009

Among the handful of Bordeaux wines that can challenge the First Growths for complexity and power, Château Cos d'Estournel is easily one of the top producers in Saint-Estèphe. Adjacent to Château Lafite-Rothschild in the neighbouring appellation of Paulliac, Cos d'Estournel produces wines that contain an unusually high percentage of Merlot (40%) when compared to other wines from the appellation. Consequently, the wines show an enjoyable fleshy, chewy texture. Current vintages are more accessible than before, displaying broad and often chocolaty-rich dark berry flavours and supple tannins. Tasted by salil on 12/5/2011 & rated 93 points: The fruit's blacker and deeper in flavour here than in the other old Bordeaux; this comes across remarkably fresh and bright though framed with mature cedar, tobacco and graphite notes. Elegant, finessed and supple, though conveyed with a sense of power and richness. Great wine.

Tasted by Anonymous on 9/18/2011 & rated 95 points: Decanted only for sediment. Dark purple in colour, with a slight bricking at the rim of the glass. Much like the Ducru Beaucaillou, this was showing an incredible, youthful vibrancy. Beautiful nose of chocolate, cedar, coffee, truffles, leaves, cigar, black cherry and blackberries. The palate offered up incredibly dark fruits, earthiness and an exceptional finish that lingered in the mouth. There was nice acidity on this, showing impeccable balance. Magnificent.
