Community Tasting Notes (average 89.8 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 30 notes) - hiding notes with no text
Tasted by Papies on 2/19/2011 & rated 90 points: Decanted for 1 hour or so. Usefull but not essential other then sediment front
Well matured and most likely past its glory days. The nose is beautifull, deep, pure. Unfortunately on the palate the wine has lost its vibrancy and most of the fruit. Drink now. (135 views)
Tasted by wallstreet on 12/15/2010: Once again, a nicely mature bordeaux. Not the most complex of wines, but definitely pleased all of us at the table. Ready to go, will not improve, drink up and enjoy. (418 views)
Tasted by Alex H on 11/13/2010 & rated 89 points: Beautifully matured bordeaux nose of leather, funk, earth and dark cassis . Fresher by 10 years than it should, everything has been well brought together with a great balance of fresh dark fruits, cassis, some bbqness, invigorating cool minerality coming at the end too. An overlooked vintage for sure! Absolutely lovely masculine wine with a tone of classiness and full of vigour. A point of reference for why when bordeaux is good it can really be good and age well. This could go for another 10 years . (666 views)
Tasted by TheWineMonkey on 9/29/2010 & rated 89 points: The wine has a medium tawny colour. On the nose the wine is medium in intensity with aromas of spice, leather & toast. On the palate the wine is dry, medium to high in acidity, with medium levels of tannins. There are flavours of ripe cherry, butter & cedar. I was surprised how noticeable the tannins were, in fact quite jagged. After two to three hours the tannins did soften with more noticeable cherry fruit and butter flavours on the palate. With time the nose tended to a bouquet with more pronounced leather aromas. (843 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/20/2010 & rated 90 points: 1983 Cos d'Estournel offered light scents of earth, dark cherries, cassis, cedar and forest floor. Medium/full bodied, this fully mature wine ends with a spice and cassis sensation. (988 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 9/12/2010 & rated 92 points: Old bordeaux nose of cassis, red sweet cherry, cedar, tobacco. Plenty of fruit left in this. At peak. Soft mouthfeel with essentially no tannins. (922 views)
Tasted by wallstreet on 8/7/2010 & rated 90 points: Had this wine at Bern's Steakhouse. Total cost $70, couldn't beat it. For a so-so vintage, Cos produced a very good wine and a great QPR wine based on the values today. Slight bricking, but not over the hill , a nice mature wine that benefited from about 45 minutes in the decanter. (995 views)
Tasted by Tom_B on 6/5/2010 & rated 89 points: The cork was totally obliterated. It was humorous watching the waitstaff "operating" on the bottle, trying to get the cork out. A deep brickish color, showing sediment on the rim of the color. Notes of cedar, spice, dried black fruit, with plum the most prominent. Definitely showing its maturity, but it held up well in the glass and provided a nice example of a fully mature Bordeaux. (1284 views)
Tasted by tyvoodoo on 2/5/2010 & rated 92 points: This bottle over performed that what I had expected. Once opened this bottle smelled like dead skunk and dog poop on the nose. It was absolutely putrid and really gross. Luckily this blew off after about 30 minutes of air. On the nose is a great blend of old cedar wood, cigar box, brambly raspberries and sage. Palate has decent weight and picked up with even more air. A touch of acidity that keeps the wine fresh and lively as the tannins are pretty much integrated. Nice fruit, underbrush and road tar wrap this wine into a complete package. Still very much alive and delivering tons of pleasure. (1560 views)
Tasted by Jack250479 on 12/30/2009: Fill to upper shoulder. Clear, surprisingly deep colour - almost black with ruby tints at rim. Medium nose dominated by the sweet spiciness of new leather, liquorice and vanilla notes. Backed up by hints of cedar and red fruit (cranberries and strawberries). Palate shows the finest, well-integrated tannins (as should be expected from a wine of this age and calibre), medium acid, dusty wheat flavours with hints of blackberries and plums. Probably past it's best but a real treat nonetheless, and certainly not simply for curiosity's sake; this is still very drinkable (and went well with lamb shanks cooked with rosemary, camomile, thyme and honey). Drank on a root day - based on Maria Thun's calendar. (1621 views)
Tasted by bacchus on 12/13/2009 & rated 90 points: good bottle fill. cork was tight fitting and adhering to the side of the bottle. needed ah-so to release. minimal wine penetration of cork shank. cork was dried out and powdery. however, no seepage or ullage. the wine was dark in color with no browning or fading. at first, there was an unexpected spiciness and some funk. this blew off after a few minutes. the wine is still in good condition. most of the pleasure is in its earthiness and expression of terroir. dark skinned fruits are present as well. there are still lots of tannins here which indicate that the wine can go a few more years. sedimentation remained at the end of the bottle and did not interfere with enjoyment of the wine. although, next time i might want to filter out. readers take note that this is a 1/2 bottle. so, assuming that you hold full bottles you can probably side with those who go long on longevity estimates. cos is one of my favorites and it rarely, if ever, disappoints.
