Description

About Cos d'Estournel
Among the handful of Bordeaux wines that can challenge the First Growths for complexity and power, Château Cos d'Estournel is easily one of the top producers in Saint-Estèphe. Adjacent to Château Lafite-Rothschild in the neighboring appellation of Paulliac, Cos d'Estournel produces wines that contain an unusually high percentage of Merlot (40%) when compared to other wines from the appellation. Consequently, the wines show an enjoyable fleshy, chewy texture. Current vintages are more accessible than before, displaying broad and often chocolatey-rich dark berry flavors and supple tannins. Also look for the estate's second label wine, produced since 1994, Les Pagodes de Cos.

Full medium red. Spicy aromas of redcurrant, strawberry and plum. Ripe, lush and gentle, with a mineral character contributing to the wine impression of structure and leavening the wine's sweetness. Very long, ripely tannic finish shows slightly elevated alcohol but comes across as firm nonetheless. (A second sample showed aromas of currant, tobacco, coconut and menthol and seemed tighter, even a bit harder, in the middle palate, with a similarly firm structure; I scored this sample 93 Drink now through 2020.

Opulent!

Deep, brick red color almost to the rim. Heavy legs. Complex nose that evolved over the hour or so the bottle was opened. Flavors of leather faded flowers, licorice, and more. Perfect balance. Finish that wouldn't quit.

Just like they said

Bought this at futures and never expected it would be this good (drunk 3/08) as many of my 82's have faded. But this time Parker, Tanzer, and WS got it right. I would only give it 4 1/2 stars tho. I wouldn't recognize a perfect wine.
