Description

Decanter Magazine rated the 2000 vintage as particularly successful in the southern Rhône, and Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe was outstanding: “Some wines will rival the magnificent 1998s in quality.”

Some notes on this wine:

94 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, February 2003.

"Super-ripe blackberry and cassis fruit dominates the 2000's aromatics. Reminiscent of a fuller, beefier version of the 1985, this low acid, accessible Beaucastel is likely to be bottled earlier than normal according to Francois Perrin. A classic blend of 30% grenache, 30% mourvedre, 10% syrah, 10% counoise with the remainder miscellaneous varietals, this deep ruby purple coloured 2000 possesses a sweet nose dominated by black fruits, loads of glycerin, full body, and superb purity. It will be atypically delicious young, yet will last 15-20 years."

"Clean and fresh, bursting with fruit and spices. Full-bodied, it delivers some game, truffle, vanilla notes. It's distinctive and ought to reveal wonderful terroir with age, but for now it hasn't come together. Needs time. Drink now through 2020. 16,665 cases made."
Wine Spectator : 90/100, August 2003.

"Deep garnet colour with a faint touch of brick in the rim. Classic Beaucastel earthy/meaty/gamey nose with an undercurrent of stewed strawberries, Chinese dried plums and soy. Quite elegant on the palate with a medium to full body and a reasonably taut structure of medium to high acidity and a medium level of velvety tannins. Layer upon layer of spices and savoury flavours. Long finish. Drink now to 2024."
Robert Parker : 94/100, November 2009.

"Absolutely firing on all cylinders and with an open, borderline slutty profile, the 2000 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a dream on the nose, showing complex, meaty aromas of black truffle, spice rack, charcuterie, and garrigue. There‟s fantastic intensity here and you can smell this wine as soon as the bottle is opened. Just as good on the palate, the wine sports a medium to full-bodied, ripe profile, perfect balance, and a dazzling finish that has you looking for another glass. I’m a fan and while this will no doubt continue to shine, don’t hesitate to pop bottles now"
The Rhone Report, Jeb Dunnuck: 97/100, November 2011.

“The 2000 vintage is still a young wine of rare quality, flawless! The nose is very fresh, with notes of chocolate. The mouth is round and reveals ripe fruit, soft tannins and good length.” Famille Perrin, September 2016.

"This vintage is a true example of balance: expressive and complex, a bouquet of many different fruit. This vintage has remained young and fresh. The tannins are silky and fine. This wine is very suitable for a drinking now but can also be kept for several years, with a very good ageing potential."
Famille Perrin, October 2017.

Melli: 94 Points
Amazing wine, still with backbone and plenty of fruit. Pleasant surprise!
Cellartracker, May 2021.

The bottle on sale is the one shown in the photographs. It comes from a wooden case of 12 bought from a reputable UK wine merchant on release. I have kept it since release in a proper dark underground cellar, stored on its side. The level, label and capsule are good, as shown.
