Description

Le Clos de La Coulée de Serrant is undoubtedly the most famous "monopole" vineyard/appellation in the Loire Valley. Although the quality and style of the winemaking in more recent years splits the jury, this wine is from the golden era, and is absolutely classic Savennieres - perhaps one of the finest of all. This is my own tasting note;

Clear, bright gold/straw colour. The nose is very seductive – lemon and lime, diesel and lanolin, with underlying notes of slate, straw, primrose and herbs (sage, clove, fennel). Very classy and very complex. The palate is almost steely dry, with citrus and mineral flavours in abundance, a little reticent at first, but opening out to reveal richer, deeper flavours - honey, hints of peach and Seville orange, certainly Bramley apple and quince, with a fine backbone of acidity and a finish that lingers for a good deal of time. Amazingly tight and well-delineated, yet truly elegant, this could quite easily be mistaken for something much younger, with only the colour and the diesel/petrol/lanolin nose betraying its age. This has a long life ahead of it. Will it improve? Possibly - even probably – but it certainly isn’t going to fall off its perch in the foreseeable future. Fully certified biodynamic.

But don't take my word for it - here is what Master of Wine and renowned Loire expert Richard Kelley says of this wine on his website www.richardkelley.co.uk (reproduced with Richard's kind permission);

"Bright. Mid-depth straw/yellow. Attractive dry and tightly mineral nose with hints of apple and quince and developing lime and marmalade notes with time. Coconut and gorse with a savoury character developing. Deeply complex. Stony with a hint of reduction. Refined and delicate on entry. Taut but juicy acidity. Powerful with a strong mineral expression. Grapefruit flavours with a pithy finish. Profound and persistent. Tasted over a five day period, this just improved over time. This is drinking well now, but will continue to hold for many more years. A great wine."
