Description

I tasted the 1996 Ducru Beaucaillou on four separate occasions from bottle in January. The 1996 is long, with a deep mid-palate. It also reveals tannin in the finish. This wine is remarkable. It is muscular, concentrated, and classic. Bottled in late June, 1998, it exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color, as well as a knock-out nose of minerals, licorice, cassis, and an unmistakable lead pencil smell that I often associate with top vintages of Lafite-Rothschild. It is sweet and full-bodied, yet unbelievably rich with no sense of heaviness or flabbiness. The wine possesses high tannin, but it is extremely ripe, and the sweetness of the black currant, spice-tinged Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is pronounced. This profound, backward Ducru-Beaucaillou is a must purchase. It will be fascinating for readers who own the 1996 to follow the evolution of this exceptional vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2035.
Robert Parker 96/100

Silky texture, fine flesh, a wine with class. **** Michael Broadbent

Tasted by slaughterer on 5/27/2012 & rated 96 points: Ruby red. Ethereal nose of sweet red cherry, roses, pineapple, and earth. Semi-modern palate of chocolate covered cherries, holunder and strawberries, sweet gooseberries, rich chocolate pudding, butter, Christmas cookies, rose water, leather, coriander. Polished, fine tannins. Good balance. Not massive, but medium bodied. Not so filigrain and racy, but a good piece of proof as to why Saint Julien is the "red-berry fruit" champion of Bordeaux. Very harmonious and easy to drink.

Tasted by Flavito on 3/22/2012 & rated 96 points: 1976 - The Paris Challenge Revisited (Bravin - Sao Paulo - Brazil): Incredibly fresh nose, and great structure, balance and elegance. Very long. Will be fantastic in a few years! Beat a very competitive Montebello by a few notches.

Tasted by DonalOB on 1/29/2012 & rated 97 points:The Impromptu '96 Horizontal (Mine, Hong Kong): This was the bottle that we opened on a whim - thank God!This had an explosive nose with strawberries and perfumed, floral notes. It was beautiful from the gate - due to space, this was the one we had to decant into a plastic measuring jug! - with graphite, cassis and strawberries on the palate. Lasted a long time too. Liquid heaven.

Tasted by RayOB on 1/29/2012 & rated 97 points: Drank in Hong Kong. Had this with a '96 Las Cases and a '96 Montrose. Dark red with no visible aging. Amazing nose straight out of the bottle that got better after a couple of hours in the decantor. Cassis, plumb, spice and tobacco. Wonderfully smooth rich with a great length. This was the Wine Of The Night. It was so much better than the other two there was no doubt. This is drinking wonderfully now but should last a heck of a lot longer.
