Description

Tasted by Jeff Leve on 12/26/2011 & rated 98 points: Some wines, due to the fame of the marquee, light up the faces of eager tasters when they are opened. The list of wines deserving of those accolades is short and sweet. Speaking of sweet, at the top of the pyramid of the world's sweet is Chateau d'Yquem. With its track record of successful vintages, that's where it belongs. 2007 d'Yquem is another great success for the chateau! With a deep gold color, the nose explodes with honey, flowers, white peaches, nectarines, orange rind, vanilla custard, nuts and overripe pineapple. There is an intensity of flavor, multiple layers of sweet, ripe, honey drenched fruit and the perfect amount of acidity to give the wine ample lift keeping it fresh. (1162 views)

Tasted by pacificoast on 7/6/2011 & rated 96 points: An absolutely brilliant Yquem, one of the best of the decade. The fruity nose only hints at the intense palate flavors to come. A very lush, generous offering of fresh fruit on the palate, primarily very-ripe apricot and orange peel. Beautifully balanced with a complex structure that fascinates. Not at all cloying or overly sweet. Very smooth finish that lasts at least a minute, nothing harsh or out of balance to mar the experience. Very well done, indeed. (2169 views)

Tasted by Paul S on 5/24/2011 & rated 96 points: CT Bordeaux Trip, Day 2 (Graves & Sauternes): What a wine! Beautiful nose, still tight, but rather lighter and fresher than I normally associate with d'Yquem, less coconut than usual too. There was a bit of it still in there somewhere, but it was the spectrum of caramel scents, butterscotch, honey, accompanied by figs and poached pear notes that stood out more. There was even a touch of flowery perfume, and a bit of high-toned passionfruit at the edges. A really nice, complex bouquet, with a dancing fresh lightness to its scents. The palate totally perished any thought of lightness though - there was just tons of rich weight and depth in a creamily textured mouthful. From attack to finish, the wine showed a whole panoply of of tropical fruit flavours - mangoes, passionfruit, even some jackfruit, along with a shade of dried apricots. Great complexity, but also with a tremendously impressive amount of integration for such a young wine. There seemed to be a slight pause at the back-palate, and then the finish sets in with a lovely sense of freshness that lifted the wine into a really superbly long back-end peppered with sweet clove, nutmeg and cinamon spice and, finally, just a little hint of coconut juice at the very tail. This is still a baby of course, but it was extremely precocious and choked-full of quality. A brilliant d'Yquem. This is one to lay down and keep for the ages.

Tasted twice - last time in April 2010. It was a very refined, sophisticated and beautifully structured wine with great intensity of aromas, great structure and striking length. Heaven's door is open.97-99/100

According to the team at d'Yquem, the 2007 vintage reminded them of a combination of 1997, the legendary 1967 and the stylish 1988. The bouquet is already wonderful - like lying on the grass on a warm spring day with all the trees in blossom. The wealth of flavour on the palate is seamless and completely mouthfilling without yet showing the glorious detail to come, while the finish is sensationally long. This has lived up to every expectation in 2007 and will surely be considered, along with the peerless 2001, as one of the truly great d'Yquems of all time.
BBR Score 19.5/20 Drink 2012-2065

"Deep golden with an orange tinge. Very tangy. And thick. At the same time. Massive weight! Extraordinary fullness. An edge of something a bit corrective - almost bitter. Very big and hits you between eyeballs. Citrus pith. Needs to settle down and become more gentle. Big and round. Almost over the top. So rich!!!!! But definite bitterness on the finish. Winemaker Sandrine Garbay, who has been there an incredible 14 years, thinks the 2001 has more finesse. I agree."
