Description

Bordeaux 1982.

When I issued my report on the 1982 vintage in the April 1983 Wine Advocate,I remember feeling that I had never tasted richer,more concentrated,more promising wines than the 1982s.Two decades later,despite some wonderfully successful years,such as 1985,1986,1989,1990,1995,1996 and 2000,1982 remains the modern day point of reference for the greatness Bordeaux can achieve.

Looking back over what I have enjoyed in the past year,1982 clarets were the most consistently mature wines.The irony is that only a few years ago I was advising you to drink them up,but they seem to have taken on a new life,with more volume and power than had seemed apparent.

Most recent tasting notes I can locate on these two wines:-

Chateau Giscours 1982.
This baby was singing from the moment it was popped and poured.Sweet cherries,toffee and wet rose petals jumped out of the glass,with the fruit and meat juice dominating the palate.Very nice and an even finish.

Chateau Reverdi 1982. (Gold Medal winner,Concours Generale Agricole Paris.1984).
Violets and lovely ripe back fruits on the nose.Mint,blackcurrants,truffles,prunes,minerality.Wonderful balance of still vibrant fruit and well merged tannins.
