Description

Another unbelievably rich, multidimensional, broad-shouldered wine, with slightly more elegance and less weight than the powerhouse 1996, this gorgeously proportioned, medium to full-bodied, fabulously ripe, rich, cassis-scented and flavored Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a beauty. It should be drinkable within 4-5 years, and keep for 25-30. This classic Pauillac is a worthy rival to the other-worldly 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2025.

Wow! What extraordinary wines Grand-Puy-Lacoste has produced in both 1995 and 1996. At present, I have a marginal preference for the blockbuster 1996, but I am not about to argue with anybody who prefers the 1995! Both are compelling wines.
Score: 95 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (115), February 1998

Some CT notes:

10/1/2017 - DAVEYLEIS1 WROTE: 95 Points
A classic wine. Cassis, plum and all the fruit in the back seat. Velvet and slightly dry on the finish. PNP or let it open. Wish I’d bought more than one case.

2/2/2017 - DJHAMMOND LIKES THIS WINE: 96 Points
I have tasted this 3 times over the last 12 months and its evolvement has been dramatic. Decanted for a couple of hours, it is now firmly in its prime drinking window and seems to improve with each tasting and for me is now matching the 1982 and 1990. Packed full of cassis and red berries the nose is incredibly heady with aromas. The fruit continues on the palate where the tannin has sufficiently sweetened to provide a balanced smoothness. The finish is long and satisfying. There still remains a slight residual sourness to resolve but it is inconsequential to the overall enjoyment. I hope that this rapid transformation over the last months perhaps indicates that other 1995's might soon start to be entering their drinking window.

12/27/2016 - DCWINO WROTE: 95 Points
Poker night - Bordeaux single blind - 95 GPL, 01 Ausone, 11 The Lovers, 03 Margaux and etc.: Intense cassis driven nose, blueberry, caramel, a hint of vanilla, blue flowers, lead pencil, a hint of cedar and earth. Excellent concentration, fully integrated polished palate, nicely integrated tannins and a long sweet cassis driven finish. My guess is the 90 Mouton. Assaf calls it the 02 Mouton which is an excellent guess. What a pleasant surprise! A beautiful claret at the youthful peak! It is drinking like a good vintage Mouton. @ $100 in the current auction market, I can’t recommend this enough!
