Description

A blockbuster 1983, Gruaud-Larose can be drunk now, but promises to keep for at least another 20-25 years. Typical of the wines this property made in the late seventies and early eighties, it offers a full throttle style, an opaque dark ruby/purple colour with no amber at the edges, and a huge nose of melted road tar, new saddle leather, grilled meats, and black fruits. It is sure to be controversial among those tasters looking for only new oak and fruit aromas. Powerful, spicy, and full-bodied, with surprising viscosity for a 1983, this wine's low acidity allows it to be appreciated now, but there are still formidable quantities of sweet tannins in the finish. One of the most successful wines produced in 1983, it is still available in the marketplace at a reasonable price. Robert Parker 92/100.

92 Points - Wine Journal

Reviews: ". Touches of bilberry, saddle-leather, cooked meats, brett and dried blood. Very fine definition. More tobacco scents coming through with aeration and after ten minutes a heavenly scent of steaming espresso and hot bricks. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannins, a touch of green pepper on the entry, a little light perhaps, nicely balance and poised with touches of red cherry, cranberry and an almost citrus edginess towards the finish. Moderate length. Engaging, complex and just lovely to drink. This is Gruaud at its best. Drink now-2020." Neil Martin, Wine Journal May, 2009.

7/15/2011 & rated 92 points: Sensational. Double decanted and still developing as the bottle slipped away - surprising youth and depth. Outstanding.
7/3/2011 & rated 94 points: Classic Bordeaux nose, with the requisite funkiness; midweight and perfectly balanced; at its peak but seemingly with plenty of life left.
2/18/2011 & rated 93 points: Dark plum in colour with bricking at the rim. Nose jumps of sweet cassis, tobacco, and cedar. Medium bodied and refined on the palate with berries at the forefront leading to a very nice finish.
