Description

In many cases, the results of my blind tastings confirmed how much I underrated several 1990s. One wine I unquestionably short-changed is the 1990 Gruaud Larose. Over the last few years I had rated the wine 90 points several times, but more often Gruaud fell comfortably in the 88-89 point category. Gruaud-Larose was superb at the most recent tasting. Moreover, this might be a 1990 that is still affordable. The wine exhibits a thick-looking, plum/purple/garnet-like color. A sensational nose of jammy black-cherries, earth, cedar, and herbs has become far more intense and striking. The wine displays sensational richness and power, but not quite the burly, monstrous size and hulking weight of the 1986 or 1982. Yet it reveals impressive stuffing and power. The low acidity emphasizes the thick, juicy, succulent fruit in this backward yet rich, chewy wine. This was the finest showing yet for the 1990 Gruaud Larose. Anticipated maturity: 1999-2020. 93pts

The 1990 is beginning to display some maturity on the brick red/tawny rim but the nose is just how I remember is last time: hot summer fruits, liquorice, a touch of sweaty saddle, spice a modicum of brett that lends it a quasi-Rhone like profile, turning very raisiny after an hour in the glass. Smooth on the entry, full-bodied, silky texture but with good acidity cutting through. Blackberry, raisin, fig and a touch of tar. It is marred by a touch of volatility on the dry finish. Overripe, but it does not seem to have aged with alacrity since I last encountered it. Drink now-2015. Tasted October 2007. 88pts

This is a wine that keeps me on my toes: tasted several times and can be an absolute delight or excessive bretty. At Farr's 89 vs. 90 tasting in October 2004. Similar colour to the 1989 but the nose is more opulent with notes of roasted chestnuts, tar and espresso coffee. The palate has lower acidity than the 1989 with that herbal quality coming through the layers of dense sweet black fruits. Very rounded, almost decadent in style. A lovely Gruaud, certainly one of the best wines that they have produced. 1999 - 2020. 94-96pts
