Description

A very strong effort for Gruaud Larose, possibly eclipsed by what they have done in 2009, this is a pure, full-bodied Gruaud Larose with plenty of new saddle leather, cedar wood, black currants, cherries, licorice, and Provencal herbs. Spicy, earthy, full-bodied, and rich, it has hit its plateau of full maturity, where it should stay for another 20 or more years.
Score: 94 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (189), June 2010

Score: 94+ Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book (4), December 2003
This saturated bluish-black/purple-colored wine seems at first closed and broodingly backward. In the mouth, it is dense, textured, full-bodied, pure, yet, at the same time, closed. This wine is large-sized, with high tannin but equally high extract and richness. The wine will require patience, and seems to me to be the best effort Gruaud Larose has put forth since their sumptuous 1990. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.
Score: 94+ Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (146), April 2003

This immense, opaque black/purple-colored, structured offering possesses high tannin, full body, and a broodingly backward personality with immense extract, concentration, and power. This long-lived behemoth will require patience as it is the densest, most powerful and tannic wine made since the estate's still adolescent 1986. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030+
Score: 93/95 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (139), February 2002

The finest effort from this estate since 1990, Gruaud-Larose has turned out a less animalistic, opaque purple-colored classic displaying notes of smoke, ripe black currants, minerals, earth, pepper, and barbecue spices. The wine has a firm tannic underpinning, full body, and a thick, rich style with noticeable creamy new oak. This is a true vin de garde that will require considerable patience given its structure and tannin levels. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2035.
