Description

A terrific example for the vintage, and the first of a remarkable trilogy for La Fleur de Gay, the dark garnet-colored 1988 has notes of melted licorice intermixed with espresso, sweet red and black fruits, mineral, and spice. The wine’s exuberant fragrance is followed by a very delineated, moderately tannic, medium to full-bodied wine with superb concentration, sweet but noticeable tannin, and outstanding depth. A beautiful wine to drink over the next 10-15 years. Anticipated maturity: Now-2015. 93/100 Robert Parker

The wine called Château La Fleur de Gay is actually a separate bottling of selected parcels in the best terroirs belonging to Château La Croix de Gay. This 100 percent Merlot, matured in 100 percent new oak, debuted in the 1982 vintage and made an immediate splash. Based on our reviews, its best vintages came in its first decade; based on the bottles we opened this weekend, they were very fine indeed.
The 1988 is at its peak, a silky wine with mature flavors of dried cherry, tobacco, cedar and spice. It’s elegant and full of finesse. 93/100 points. Wine Spectator 2011.

A vintage with merits usually obscured by the spectacular 1989 and 1990 wines. Lafleur demonstrates that it would be a mistake to underrate 1988 in Pomerol. Initially muted, dense, and chalky on the nose, aeration persuaded some lean cherry aromas to emerge; but the nose is elegant rather than opulent. The palate has a fine attack, still fresh and lively; concentrated, of course, but still tight. It may be less complex than the 1989 or 1995, but this has beautiful poise and elegance and a startling brightness of fruit. It's balanced and harmonious, and very finegrained tannins secure a long finish. 18/20 The World of Fine Wine
