Château Lascombes 2001 displays wonderful deep, intense colour. Aromas of red berry fruit combine well with elegant oak. An explosive attack on the palate, with power, concentration, richness and roundness, is followed by a delicious mingling of fruit, spice and oak. The finish is long and enticing with a hint of chocolate. This vintage is seductive and elegant, well worthy of its appellation, and magnificent for laying down. However, it will also be delicious in its youth.

2001 was a pivotal year for Château Lascombes with the new owners revamping the whole of the winery and making a significant improvement in the quality of the wine. Despite high rainfall during autumn and drought conditions the summer, this vintage showed a stylish new character and elegance, both in the premium wine, Château Lascombes, and its second label, Chevalier de Lascombes, thanks to the passionate commitment and skill of the new team. Carefully carried out de-leafing and crop thinning ensured optimal ripeness of fruit at picking, which took place during the first weeks of October. Pre-fermentation cold maceration was introduced for the first time in 2001. This process imparts deeper colour and greater aromatic complexity. For this vintage, half of the malolactic fermentation was done in barrels. Another first in this year of great changes was the ageing the wine in 100% new oak barrels. The ageing process now involves keeping the lees in suspension through rotating the barrels on Oxoline racks twice a week. After several rackings, the wine is fined with egg whites before being bottled.
