Description

The 1990 is super-ripe, supple, and already delicious. Made in an unctuous, richer, more meaty style than the 1989, it exhibits fine ripeness, a generous fruitiness, and flattering, sweet, plummy, oaky flavors. Anticipated maturity: Now-2004. 88pts

First tasted in April 2004 when it displayed a deep purple/garnet core, a little deeper than Lafleur-Petrus 1990 tasted a week before. The nose is dominated by vanillary new oak, flashy though lacking complexity. Turning more meaty/savory with aeration but never attaining profundity. The palate is also dominated by new oak, quite rich and new worldy. Well-knit was quite noticeable acidity for a 1990. But again it lacks complexity: straightforward plummy fruits with a touch of fig. Very quaffable, but not an intellectual wine. Could drink over 6-7 years. But another bottle tasted blind a month later was a revelation. A decadent, unmistakable Pomerol nose with notes of savory fruit, cooked meats and gingerbread. Very harmonious on the palate, rich black earthy fruits. Rounded, a touch of raisin and fig. Very complex. This bottle exhibits less oak than before. Very attractive. 93-95pts
