Description

The following is a tasting note from 2001 -

Château Léoville-Barton (St Julien) 1986: Certainly this has the deepest colour of all the wines in this flight. It is giving very little on the nose, just a momentary hint of caramel oak, but otherwise this is acting really dumb. On the palate it is big, rich and very tannic. Seems very closed down. Those tannins dominate the finish, typical of 1986. 16.5+?/20 (April 2001)

There are many more recent tasting reviews on cellartracker and most of these show that the wine has matured well. I would suggest from drinking a couple of these halves recently that this wine (at least in 1/2 bottle) is at its peak now. The fruit factor is now pushing through and the wine retains a degree of freshness with softening, integrated acidity and very well balanced tannin. The length is spectacular and certainly benefits from at least an hour in the decanter.
