With dear friends today for lunch "at the turn" :)

Stood 750ml for weeks. It might've gotten shaken in some car travel over this weekend but nothing tragic. No decant this time, simply popped cork 30 mins ahead, then served with a terrific rack of lamb. Another strong showing and quite similar to my previous one: "Classic Barton profile on the nose (cedar, leather) and palate (great structure, grippy tannins holding dark red fruit, oak fading). Medium-plus finish. Continued to improve in the glass over the course of an hour, slowly gaining weight without any drying." The nose grew a bit more reticent after the hour, while the palate was filling in beautifully. At peak now but no rush to finish these.

The wine was very fresh tasting for such an old wine. Great bouquet; good fruit. It was paired with a 1996 Leoville Barton that had more strength and tannin. Both were excellent. There was a debate about which was preferred.

Decanted one hour. Still deep red, showing some age but not that brown. Warm, mellow with plums chocolate and tobacco. Slight acidity on finish and still has soft tannins. Very nice 4/5

Stood 750ml for weeks. Decant for an hour, then served. Gorgeous browning ruby color profile. Very similar showing to my last one: "Classic Barton profile on the nose (cedar, leather) and palate (great structure, grippy tannins holding dark red fruit, oak fading). Medium-plus finish. Continued to improve in the glass, slowly gaining weight without any drying." This bottle had a tiny hint of sweetness to it that gave it an added dimension. Lovely! Zero rush - this has at least another decade of strong showings ahead.

5/9/2015 - JOHN TANG LIKES THIS WINE: 95 Points
Decanted for 2 hours and this is actually necessary for a 1989 wine. The color is old mature Bordeaux, so is the smell. It smells like raisin, blackberry, black currant (cassis), plum, mineral, espresso and light toast. The body is medium but with smooth and silky texture. Long finish, truly delicious, it tastes better than the 1994 Latour which was in pair for the dinner.
