Even better from bottle than from cask, and one of the finest wines of the vintage, this dense purple-colored 2002 reveals wonderfully sweet notes of charcoal, fresh mushrooms, smoke, earth, leather, cassis, and cedar. Full-bodied, highly extracted, broodingly backward, dense, and deep, this impressively endowed offering is built for the long term. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028.

This is broody bugger of a Barton. Very closed on the nose with faint touches of blackberry, pine and graphite – you can tell it needs decanting for a couple of hours to open up. The palate has a hardness, almost abrasive quality to it, closed, surly and obdurate. Don’t touch this for another 5-6 years and go for Lagrange or Langoa in the meantime. Drink 2012-2022. Tasted November 2006.
