Description

This is what Bordeaux is all about!

1996 was an ‘Extraordinary’ vintage in St Julien, Paulliac & St Estephe rated equal with 2000 by Robert Parker & Leoville Barton is one of the most reliable and classic of Deuxièmes Crus Chateaux. The 1996 is a stunningly lovely mature Bordeaux with great substance & complexity and delivers enormous pleasure.

Tasting notes:

'Very concentrated and introvert – quite a shock when tasted, as it was in my case, immediately after Le Pin! Focussed but hard work for the moment. As so often, this wine concentrates the vintage’s characteristics and this is a very long term pleasure. Lots of fine tannins – sinewy build. Rigorous.' – 2005 – 2016. JR 17.5.

'This impressive wine is a classic. Although backward, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to abundant black currant fruit intertwined with spicy oak and truffle-like scents. The wine is brilliantly made, full-bodied, and tightly-structured with plenty of muscle and outstanding concentration and purity. It should turn out to be a long-lived Leoville Barton, and somewhat of a sleeper. However, patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2030.' RP 91-94

'An enormous, masculine , backward wine, Leoville Barton's 1996 exhibits an opaque, black/purple color and sweet earthy prune, and black currant aromas intertwined with scents of licorice and Asian spices. Enormous and full-bodied, with a sweet mid-palate and mouth-searing tannin in the finish, this exceptionally dense, powerful, layered wine will require significant patience. Its explosive power and richness may push this wine's ultimate rating into the mid-nineties. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2040.' 92+

Recent Cellar tracker note:

‘Dark ruby color with a deep, opulent, brooding nose with notes of black currants, char, tobacco and gray slate. A thickly-textured, young wine still even at age 19 with rich flavors of blackberries, minerals and slate. Finishes still tannic and taut but with wonderful complexity lurking underneath. A great vintage for LB that still needs 5+ years to reach its peak. 93+’ 21.03.2015 Dream on Cellar tracker.
