The solidly made 2003 Leoville Las-Cases (13.2% alcohol) is a blend of 70.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17.2% Merlot, and 12.6% Cabernet Franc. In this incredibly hot vintage, the alcohol is slightly lower than achieved in 2002, a cool-climate year. While not a profound example of Las-Cases, the 2003 is muscular, deep, and full-bodied with an impressive ruby/purple color, a tight but juicy bouquet of vanilla, black cherries, crushed rocks, and flowers, a sweet attack, and moderately high tannin. Backward and fresh, displaying impeccable delineation and purity, it can be enjoyed between 2012-2023.

A deep, clear garnet core with ruby rim. A ripe, sweet nose dominated by vanillary new oak at the moment. Quite floral, touches of violets and peonies. Great definition: you would never know this is a 2003. Full-bodied, this has certainly firmed up since I last tasted it, the tannins still slightly unresolved. Black fruits, a touch of blueberry and cassis leading towards plum on the black palate. Surprisingly good acidity and good weight though not overbearing although perhaps just lacking a little length on the finish. This is undoubtedly a great, opulent 2003, Las-Cases demonstrating its class although within the pantheon of Las-Cases, not right at the top. Drink 2015-2030. Tasted December 2007.
