Description

Thanks to the blessings of their terroir and to the painstaking and loving care devoted to their vinification, barrel-ageing and bottling, the wines of Château MAUCAILLOU are undeniably exceptional, on a par with many Médoc Grands Crus Classés.

Given the organoleptic qualities of Château MAUCAILLOU wines, many writers have compared them with Médoc Grands Crus Classés: “This wine has constantly enhanced its quality and has now undeniably reached the level of a (good) cru classé” (Didier TERS). Robert PARKER shares that opinion, writing that MAUCAILLOU “is worth a 4th Cru”. Patrick DUSSERT-GERBER ranks it as a “Second great classified wine, category B”.

In BORDEAUX AND ITS WINES, Claude FERRET indicates that MAUCAILLOU “could feature in a new classification”… MAUCAILLOU could undoubtedly have ranked among the winners of the fixed classification of Grands Crus Classés, dating back to 1855. Unfortunately, it could not take part in the competition, given that its vineyard was planted in 1875 only. It has, however, already reached a respectable age.
Château MAUCAILLOU was one of the few Crus “Bourgeois” to be accepted in the very closed circle of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux, an association open only to the very best wines Bordeaux has to offer.
The wines are generally sumptuous in colour, with a particularly subtle and pleasantly fruity aromatic strength and very ripe, concentrated flavours. They are harmoniously balanced, expressive and generous, with finesse and elegance. They have a long finish, with lively appeal and remarkable cellaring potential thanks to very fine, yet firm tannins.
Tasted by DougLee on 7/26/2009 & rated 91 points: Just as impressive as the last time. Garnet color, with nose of currants, cedar, blackberries, Indian tea. Full and assured on the palate with integrated, pristine fruit layered with black currants and ligonberry. Nice grip on the flavourful and harmonious finish. Structure is present but not overwhelming. Terrific for the modest price.

Tasted by DougLee on 3/13/2009 & rated 91 points: Uncorked and aerated in the glass for one hour. Garnet colour with bricking at the edges. Lovely nose of cedar, red currants, hints of tea spices, and iodine. Elegant but still-ripe red fruit on the palate joined almost immediately by outstanding grip and a slight tingle of acidity. Tannins are in the background. Finish echoes with gooseberry and cassis notes. Among the first bottles of wine bought with cellaring in mind over eleven years ago, paying off nicely now.

Tasted by Kevin H on 4/22/2007 & rated 91 points: Mature blood red colour. Lovely nose of soft red fruits, a touch of mint and just a hint of raisins - clearly made from very ripe grapes. This tastes lovely, and fully mature. Classic soft ripe Bordeaux with very clean, ripe fruit. Just a hint of Moulis greenness but very slight given how ripe the fruit is. Excellent wine.
