Description

Very popular with British merchants at this period. (This is a Grant's of St James's bottling.) Outstanding - still fairly deep and velvety though fully mature. Bouquet opened up deliciously, fabulous fragrance, crystallised violets, yet a certain fragility; sweet, fairly full bodied, glorious rich flavour, soft yet still tannic. September 2005 ***** Michael Broadbent

A clone of the 1961 with sweeter fruit and the same enormous weight and richness 95/100 Robert Parker
96/100 Wine Spectator

Tasted by Burgundy Al on 6/12/2012 & rated 93 points: Farewell to a Great Restaurant (Charlie Trotter's - Chicago IL): Ripe, powerful still showing generous fruit. Great spice, liqueur hints. Impressive density in middle and finish.

Tasted by fclarity on 10/3/2011 & rated 95 points: From a Nicholas Cuvee bottle in perfect condition (low neck fill), this wine had a deep red center with light reddish/orange rims. The medium+ intensity nose showed black cherry, mocha, silty soil, and a hint of maple syrup.
The deep color and the dark, forest floor flavors of this wine had the crew guessing early 1960's CA cabernet. However, it had a tobacco spice that I have not tasted in a CA cab to date. While it was thick, this wine was surprisingly light on its feet. It had very round tannin and great length. This appeared to be a late release bottling that benefited from a ton of air time. While it will probably not get any better, it will last for ages.

Tasted by KSC02 on 1/22/2010 & rated 94 points: Top shoulder fill. Upon cutting the capsule the cork showed dusty white mold on top, as it should. The cork came out without much gentle coaxing. Deep red staining half-way up the cork with blood red, fresh wetness on the cork bottom. Pouring into glass the color was deep red with just the very slightest evidence of a thin brown-orange ring around the edge. Viscous and lush in color. Absolutely amazing for the age of this wine. After a very brief period of subdued funk blowing off, lush aromas of currant, dark berries and cedar, with mild aromas of leather and mushroom in the background, began wafting from the glass. The first sip gave evidence of a fresh, yet subtle, underpinning of tannin supporting the deep, dark berry, mushroom and cedar in the mouth. Lush, soft and silky. A gorgeous, mid-full body mouth feel. The tannin continuously subsided and integrated over the next 3 hours. Each sip was slightly better than the previous. Mid-long finish. Nice complexity. Not as complex as some other Bordeaux wines of this vintage but very classy and enjoyable nonetheless. If you are cellaring this wine, there is no rush to open. This beauty has a handful of years left in it without any fear of degradation.
