Description

Main characteristics of the vintage:
From the beginning to the end, the year was exceptional. The months of spring were fair, with an early flowering (mid-flowering in June 4th) without coulure nor millerandage. July, August, and September were hot, very sunny and dry continuously; heat and exceptional drought characterize the harvest season. Evidently, the temperatures were high for the season: 20°C in the morning and 30-32°C in the afternoon.
Period of harvest: September 14th - September 29th. These perfect conditions fashioned a wine of an overwhelming quality.

A serious combination, Montrose and the 1982 vintage. And so it proved to be. A great wine. ***** Michael Broadbent.

Sweet kirsch, black currant, crushed rock, and floral notes are followed by a full-bodied, opulent, fleshy wine displaying no hard edges. It still possesses beautifully pure fruit as well as good body, but it should be consumed over the next 5-8 years.
Score: 92/100 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (183), June 2009

What an elegant and superlative Montrose. This has aged beautifully and is sitting in a perfect place right now. Deep crimson to the rims and still showing good clarity. The nose is packed with earthy and mineral aromas and notes of dried fruit and licorice. On the palate there is still a surprising amount of fruit mainly in the form of black currant and wild blueberries, perfectly balanced with the secondary cedar, oak and mocha flavors which have now emerged. The tannins are fully integrated and the texture is delightfully soft and unctuous throughout. And for the grand finale an amazing 45 second finish with lingering hints of nougat and caramel! It's a rare pleasure to enjoy such a gracefully aged wine that is right at the top of its prime. Drink now.

Opened this great bottle on Christmas Eve along some serious australian Wagyu beef entrecotes, and what a splendid combination it was! The Montrose was bright ruby red in the glass, showing at least 10 years less than its age, great complex nose with red fruits and earthy undertones, on the palate still tannic but extremely harmonious, very very long, glad I still have a few left, I will cherish this wine and wait for it to evolve even more.

San Diego WineSpectator.com Offline, 9/20/2013 (The Westgate Room, Westgate Hotel): Opened at 6 PM, allowed to breathe in bottle until 7 PM, then decanted and quickly re-bottled. Tasted at 9 PM. Clear dark blood-brick red. Wonderful bouquet of cigar tobacco, red currants, forest floor, with a fresh edge of evergreen and lavender. Elegant, balanced, full body, long finish. Still singing as I write this at 1:45 AM. My #2 tonight.

2/18/2013 - ANONYMOUS WROTE:92 Points
Tremendous nose. Still youthful colour, but tannins now softened. Smooth elegant and long, but more complexity and generosity yet to come. 5-10 years away from peak. 92 for now but up to 95 in time...........

Single bottle. Good cork, level base of neck. Wonderful St. Estèphe, fully mature, great fruit and depth, hint of stables, medium weight, excellent balance, lovely minerality, ripe tannins, good length. Absolutely delightful.

Singing this afternoon. Classic profile with good fruit and - more importantly for the vintage - fresh acidity. Still some tannin. Just magical - a wine that is both serious and fun. Cedar, mature black currant and iron. Endless finish. Best bottle from the case so far.

Drunk chez JNJ. Clear deep red wine, no hint of brown. Powerful plum fruit on nose and much more complexity of fruit on palate. I recall drinking the 1961 and 1986 Montrose which were dominated by tannin. Not at all so here. Funny year, 1982, but glorious in this case.

Amazing still youthful bouquet with even some cassis. Same on the palate; cassis, even a bit creamy with soft tannin which still has a bite. Also real class and complexity with tobacco, blood, beautifully integrated oak etc. etc. A great wine and it will stay on this level at least until 2016 or even longer. We had an excellent bottle!

6/29/2011 - TBABES WROTE:97 Points
The fill was into the neck and the cork was pristine; opened (but did not decant) about 30 minutes prior to service. A touch of amber at the rim; extroverted bouquet, proudly offering up notes of cedary black fruits, roasted herbs, tapenade, and hints of truffle, leather and tobacco. Medium bodied, with a remarkably velvety texture, impressive depth, balance and focus, and a long and complex finish. What a wonderful, complex and fully mature wine!
