Description

I have for sale 3 bottles of Chateau Montrose 1998 which have been stored in their original wooden case. The bottles are in very good condition and the levels are superb. The cheapest you can buy individual bottles of this is £92 inc VAT at Fine & Rare wines. My reserve is well below this.

ROBERT PARKER - 90 Points

A classic effort, the 1998 Montrose exhibits a dense purple color in addition to a sweet nose of jammy cassis, licorice, earth, and smoke. It is a powerful and full-bodied wine with well-integrated tannin. Given Montrose's tendency to shut down, it is performing better out of bottle than I expected. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030. Delicious wine! Decant helped as tannins still persist although much softer than younger montroses. These wines are tough nuts to crack, take time to develop but the 1998 is opening up nicely. Plenty of dark fruit, chocolate and silky finish... Not as refined as the 1998 Las Cases, but every bit as good! I actually prefer it slightly as its a bolder red... It may have a longer life ahead too, but if you want a classic Montrose now, this is a good pick!

Not the best showing for Montrose. Color deep ruby with some lightening. Early on, the nose had some barnyard and earthiness that seemed to subside. Cassis, herbs, and tobacco. Lacks a bit of concentration. Prominent acidity. Smooth tannins. Medium length finish. Not a bad wine, but lacking complexity and concentration. A stern and austere wine.

7/22/2015 - GNBB WROTE: 92 Points
Drinking now. Absolutely spot on. Will certainly hold its own for few more years to come. Now-2022.

6/26/2015 - ANONYMOUS WROTE: 93 Points
A pure coincidence; two blind tastings this week and two times Montrose 1998. This bottle; beautiful bouquet with cassis, beautiful oak, cedar and a touch of pleasant barnyard. On the palate the same luxury. Dark forest fruits, beautiful acidity and round tannin with still a good bite. Much more fresh and youthful than the bottle I had earlier this week and more in line with my tasting note from 2013. This bottle came from a different cellar than my previous two notes, but considering the two bottles of this week, there is bottle variance. Scored the wine of tonight 93 with still a future until at least 2020.

Bordeaux 1998 tasting by my friend who calls himself “100wines”: Beautiful bouquet with cassis, leather and tobacco and also a firm amount of barnyard. On the palate a luxurious wine with beautiful oak, red and dark berries and beautiful acidity. Soft and mature tannin with a pleasant bite. Overall this bottle seemed to be quite much more mature compared to the one I tasted two years ago. It spreads through the mouth beautifully, has a good length and is elegant as well.
