Description

Brought in 1989 on the occasion of my birth.
The wine is rich and sumptuous with deep, brooding blackcurrant and blackberry compote notes mingling with spicy cedar wood, The palate is smooth and velvety with an almost magical balance of fruit, tannins, acidity and secondary, earthy truffle notes.

Bottle in excellent condition. Some water damage to the back label. Front label has a slight tear and partly coming away in one corner.
12.5% vol, 75cl

This 1989 vintage label was designed by German artist, Georg Baselitz. It consists of two upside down rams (the ram is the Mouton emblem) with the words “Drüben sein jetzt hier” which translates as “Over there is now over here” in reference to the tearing down of the Berlin Wall.

The 1989 vintage was almost perfect – a sunny and dry winter allowing the vines to rest. Spring was warm and humid and summer was warm and dry. This resulted in the earliest harvest of the 20th Century at Mouton Rothschild.

Majestic wines -
From the superb 1989 vintage, this is a full-bodied wine which is approaching full maturity and is now drinking fantastically. Described by Sotheby’s Serena Sutcliffe as “...glorioulsy alluring, with signature Mouton cassis and intense concentration.” Drink now - 2020.

Neil Martin, Wine Journal 2010 -
Reviews"The Mouton ’89 is a lovely Pauillac that has reached its plateau of maturity. It has an engaging cedar-scented bouquet touches of cigar box, mint and a touch of Italian cooked meats. Very well defined, very “old school”. The palate is medium-bodied and very harmonious with grainy tannins. It continues the aromatic theme of cedar and tobacco, relatively foursquare compared to Pichon-Baron of Lynch Bages, with a slightly leafy finish that demonstrates great persistency. It is very “classic” in style, restrained, elegant and bearing similarities to Lafite. Drink now-2030."
