Description

Surprise, surprise! The 1998 Mouton has emerged as the greatest wine produced at this estate since the perfect 1986, of which the 1998 is somewhat reminiscent. Like many of its peers, it has filled out spectacularly. Now in the bottle, this opaque black.purple-coloured offering has increased in stature, richness, and size. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc (57% of the production was utilised), it is an extremely powerful, super-concentrated wine offering notes of roasted espresso, crème de cassis, smoke, new saddle leather, graphite, and licorice. It is massive, with awesome concentration, mouth-searing tannin levels, and a saturated flavour profile that grips the mouth with considerable intensity. This is another 50-year Mouton, but patience will be required as it will not be close to drinkability for at least a decade. This wine rivals the 1996 and 1995. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050.
Score: 96/100 Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book (4), December 2003

Very good cellartracker notes:

A wine in complete balance. Heavenly aromas of earthy beets pervade and follow through in the taste, along with cassis, integrated cherries. Ready to drink now but this will develop additional layers given five years or more. A superb Mouton.

Drank at BBR
Amazingly rich yet refined complex nose of spice, earth, forest floor, cassis, leather and cedar. A really incredible huge complex mouth that coats your taste buds and keeps changing. Very long length. Amazing stuff from Mouton. WOW.

Second blind Bordeaux-flight of the day. Pours drenched dark and deep intense ruby color.
The aromas are clearly more multifaceted and pronounced than the rest of the wines tasted today. Intoxicating complexity that makes you want to dig deeper and deeper. At first some prune fruit seem a bit warmer than anticipated, but then in an awesome wave the deep chassis, roasted coffee notes, leather, dried herbs and wet leaves sweeps in. Definitely reeking of left bank first growth.
More modern-styled but at the same time elegant, quite vigorous but not over-the-top. Plump, concentrated and vaguely astringent mouth feel. The tannins have softened a bit, but are still distinct and incredibly fine-grained. High refreshing acidity along with lots of flavors. On the palate I get characteristics of exotic spice, earth, truffles, cigar box and crème de cassis. Nuances of all flavors lingers in a long finish.
Tremendously attractive complexity. Fantastic balance (alcohol as low as 12,5%) and elegance. This wine can rest effortless for another 10 years in the cellar. Lovely!

5/23/2013 - ALEX WILLIAM WROTE:
Fabulous. Stunning and unique aromatics. The bouquet alone is worth the price-tag. Has hit it's drinking window.
