Description

“First tasted June 2002. Dense cedary nose with lots of plum, cassis and cigar box aromas. Beautiful balance on palate. Good acidity with notes of cedar and blackcurrant. Quite a straight-forward wine but there is so much elegance and finesse. Definitely a top quality Mouton and superior to the 1981. Possibly my preferred Mouton to consume now. Then in December 2004. An intense cigar-box, blackberry, pencil-lead nose. Superb definition and vigour but quite backward for the vintage. The palate has excellent concentration, fresh with nose of tobacco, black earthy fruit, cedar and an animally touch. Very focused with superb length. Definitely superior to Latour 1983. There is something that reminds me of a Saint Julien on the finish. A great Mouton."

Neal Martin 2008: 94-96 points

"Super-refined 1983 Bordeaux with an excellent deep ruby color and intense cigar-box, plum and berry aromas and flavors; there's even a hint of mint. It's full-bodied but very reserved in style with fine tannins and a seductively long finish."

Winespectator: 94 points

"Evolving in a positive fashion, 1983 is turning out to be a fine vintage for Mouton. Although not a big wine, this medium-weight Mouton displays an attractive nose of blackcurrants, black-cherries, olives, and minerals. Medium-bodied, with sweet but noticeable tannin in the finish, as well as beautiful elegance and complexity, this wine is close to reaching its plateau of maturity. I have always thought it resembled this property's 1966."

Wine Advocate: 91 points

"Deep nose of undergrowth and cedarwood. Great velvety texture that coats the mouth. Aromatic. Creamy, cappuccino-like aftertaste followed by plums. Much thicker than the 1985 but harder."

Serena Sutcliffe, MW

"The best bottle I have enjoyed to date. Nose: Lead pencil, meat: 92 intially, but came areound as it sat in the glass. Not overbearing, just lovely. Now a 97. Palette: Very refined. Some meat (likely a very winey boeuf bourguignon), fruit is there at the peak. Very difficult to describe. Delicate and lovely. What fine wine is meant to be, with emphasis on the word fine."

Cellartracker January 2013: 97 points

"Quite shocked that this outclassed the Latour and the Margaux on this night. Nose of mint, cedar, smoke, soil, and florals. High toned and firing on all cylinders. Palate is classy with mostly integrated tannins, and a long finish."

Cellartracker April 2013: 97 points

"1983 tasting. All wines opened immediately before serving. Half the table had this as there wine of the night. Beautiful. but does not stand up to the 82 and does not match the Margaux or for that matter the Pichon. Fully mature+, currant and tobacco nose; mature but full fruited currant and mineral palate with resolved tannins and a long finish."
