Description

Wine has been stored in a temperature controlled cooler.

Expert tasting note: "Deep. dark, not quite opaque ruby-red with a red/purple rim. Ripe, concentrated dark-fruit aromas have plenty of cedary new oak. Concentrated blackcurrant fruit is dominated by cedar & tobacco. Tannins are plentiful & the fruit on the finish is relatively closed, cutting the finish short.

A genuine legend from Bordeaux, a wine elevated to the top by Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Rich, opulent and harmonious, it elegantly expresses the quintessential character of its appellation. According to cellarWatch in a recent market report, Mouton-Rothschild 2000 is one of the few Bordeaux First Growths that continues to climb in value (having now overtaken Lafite-Rothschild 2000 in price, due to Chinese demand for these "Augsburg ram" bottles).
Cellarwatch believes that this is primarily because of the unique "Augsburg ram" which is gold engraved on the bottle, instead of a normal paper label. It appears that as the engraved bottle itself becomes rarer,(apart from the high quality of the wine inside),it has become a serious collector s item, so if the wine is consumed for heaven s sake don t put the bottle in the bin!

Robert Parker s tasting notes on the 2000 Mouton-Rothschild:-
"Philippine de Rothschild has exceeded everyone s expectations with a work of art. Those who have seen the extraordinary packaging of the 2000 Mouton-Rothschild must certainly realise that this is a brilliant achievement. The bottle is extraordinary and likely to have nearly as much value empty as full! Her genius is obvious, but it s what s inside that counts. The 2000 Mouton-Rothschild is at its best with 24-48 hours decanting. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot this wine offers a saturated ruby/purple colour in addition to reticent, but promising aromas of toast, coffee, liquorice, creme de cassis and roasted nuts. Dense, chewy and backward with tremendous purity and density in addition to obvious toasty oak it is full-bodied, powerful, tannic and backward.24 to 28 hours of aeration only hints at its ultimate potential. This blockbuster will be exceptionally long-lived. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050+".
(97+ Points). Robert Parker. (The Wine Advocate. #146. April 2003).

Mouton-Rothschild s own comments on this bottle:-

"For the 2000,the Baroness has chosen an ornamental silver-gilt antique one of the Rothschild museum s finest exhibits and the emblem of the chateau. It is the little "Augsburg ram" a drinking vessel created around 1590 by Jakob Schenaeur a German master goldsmith and reproduced on the bottle using a new technique for enamelling in relief. In this way a treasure from the past has been given new life thanks to modern know-how turning the bottle itself into a collector s item".
