Description

The lot consists of 3 bottles of Chateau Musar from the eighties vintages of 1981,1985 and 1989.

Bottles of Chateau Musar seem to gain in complexity as they age, acquiring a lovely fragrance and more suppleness and finesse than in their youth, and some vintages from the 1960s are still drinking wonderfully. Some people (like Robert Parker) suggest that older vintages taste like Chateauneuf du Pape, others like myself compare it to a fine old Burgundy.

The following tasting note on the Musar 1981 was located on CellarTracker:-

"Smell...earth,cranberries,potpourri,leather,cigar box,red fruits.

Taste...raspberries,cherries,tobacco,leather,struck matches,and hints of matchsticks,portobello mushrooms.

Overall...classic and hard to put into words. It's something that has to be experienced to understand...simply words does not seem to do this wine enough justice. The scents and flavors in this wine seem to transition just before acknowledgement and it lingers on the palate effortlessly in an almost weightless presence"
(98 Points).

CellarTracker (Tasted 5/12/2010).

A tasting note from the Musarathon Vertical on the 1985 Musar was as follows:-

"Warm, sweet, ripe nose, which is ripe and full. The palate is smooth and spicy. This is ripe stuff, quite youthful, tasting with lots of sweet ripe fruit.Lovely balance and leathery complexity.Very good/excellent".
(92 Points).

Wine Anorak. (Musarathon Vertical).

Chateau Musar's own description of their 1989 vintage is as follows:-

"The 1989 is exceptional, because with war raging around them, the Chateau Musar winery was hit on several occasions and the deep cellars were used as air-raid shelters.
Serge Hochar remained philosophical throughout and said of the 1989 vintage "A dry winter, followed by a mild summer led to an exceptional vintage with very good maturity".The nose of the 1989 vintage is remarkably fragrant and attractive.Intriguing notes of roasted peanuts, smoked meat and cumin.Nice layering of flavours and texture. It is indeed a very fine wine;delicate, elegant, with good tannins and great length".
