Description

A single bottle from a well cellared case.

Wine Anorak Jamie Goode tasted this at a large vertical tasting in London a few years ago and noted it as one of his preferred vintages.
"Classy nose which is ripe, rich, sweet and herby, with some leathery complexity. The palate is mature and rounded; rich and full bodied. Very smooth and refined with great balance. Mature. Very good/excellent. 92/100"

Average Cellartracker score for this wine is 90.6 points, with two tastings notes in 2014 (both from the same person):

9/13/2014 - JOHNRM LIKES THIS WINE: 92 Points
"Just an update to my notes of a few months ago.
Browning and becoming more pale but still a vigorous colour. Having opened, decanted and set aside for 3h, the volatile acidity and 'medicinal' notes on the nose had vanished and the cinnamon, nutmeg and spice had opened nicely. The cherry brandy character emerged over the typical Musar red fruit, spice and fruitcake. Not quite as stunning as the last bottle but still an exceptional wine. Perhaps time to drink the rest......"

6/15/2014 - JOHNRM LIKES THIS WINE: 93 Points
"I held back the '87 and this is my first taste of my own stock - the advice from Musar was that this will last longer than the '86 or '88.
Browning and becoming more pale but still a vigorous colour. Typical Musar volatile acidity (with pronounced 'medicinal' notes on the nose at first) but with cinnamon, nutmeg spice. Needed 2-3 hours for the nose to 'settle'. Fantastic sour cherry fruit at first (amended after reading the percipient note below to 'sour cherry brandy'). Some spice and fruitcake but less sweet than other vintages for me, at first.
3h+ Absolutely lovely - fine, complex nose (VA gone) and the anticipated sweet (mainly red) fruit developed. The fruit (fruitcake) and spice really emerged. Some raspberry ice cream later. Very smooth, rich and long.
A wine that has years ahead of it if you store it well and open well in advance. A class act! A bottle is much too small........."
