Description

In 1814,Charles Palmer,a Major-General in the British army(having arrived in France with Wellington)bought a wine property in the Bordeaux area from the de Gascq family on which he was to leave his name. At the time, Madame du Gascq did not hesitate to compare her property with Chateau Lafite-Rothschild and still today the quality of the wines produced at Chateau Palmer are a rival to Lafite.

1982 Bordeaux wine is a historic year for a myriad of reasons. It was the first true vintage of the modern age ushering in a new style of Bordeaux wine. It was a long time coming. Not since 1961, 21 years earlier, had wines of this consistent level of quality been produced. 1982 Bordeaux wine is also the vintage famous for launching the career of the world’s most successful wine critic, Robert Parker. Parker’s non stop, exuberant praise of 1982 Bordeaux wine earned him the respect of a new generation of wine lovers that continued for more than 4 decades.

Interestingly, the 1982 Bordeaux harvest officially began September 13. That is the exact same date the 1945 Bordeaux harvest started as well! All this produced a historic Bordeaux vintage that remains revered today. Once the wine had finished fermentation, it was easy to see that 1982 Bordeaux wine was packed with layers of dense, rich, ripe, fresh fruit, opulent, sensuous textures and purity that had not been seen for decades. At the time of picking, the grapes were very ripe with low acidity levels and fine, supple tannins. The resulting wines were soft, silky and packed with fruit – in short, they had all the hallmarks of wines intended for long ageing.

Tasting notes from Enrico Bernardo, 12/01/2011: & Georges Lepre

Limpid, garnet-red colour.
Rich, complex nose with notes of red fruit, sweet spice, ash, balsam, and chanterelle mushrooms. Sturdy on the palate with an aftertaste reminiscent of green tea.

The wine is adorned with a deep ruby colour and a splash of garnet. The rich bouquet opens with notes of crushed black fruits, prunes, cinnamon, vanilla, gingerbread, bright tobacco, smoke and bay leaves. There is a beautiful blend of fruit and an expression of rare and noble tannins. The wine is fleshy, smooth and fresh, especially in its long and flavorful finish. Terroir and the Palmer style shine through.

An accomplished wine, harmonious, it will keep well into the 20s (2020…).
