Description

This auction is for a bottle of Chateau Pape Clememnt 1966 which was donated by Laura Clay, Honorary Secretary of AWE. It was Laura’s idea to involve AWE in Wine Relief by auctioning a few bottles and she was delighted that it was immediately supported by the Chairman and Honorary President. She is enormously grateful to Bid for Wine for making this possible [BfW - Our pleasure, it's a great cause!]. As a Bordeaux tutor, it seems only fitting that the bottle Laura has donated is a claret!

If you are 45 this year, what better way to celebrate than with a bottle from your birth year? And for those of you who need an alternative excuse to bid for this wine, 1966 was, according to Michael Broadbent’s Wine Vintages, ‘An excellent long-haul vintage. .... a vintage of real quality and great style; Bordeaux at its most uncompromising, yet elegant......what good claret is all about.’

Pape Clément is the jewel in Bernard Magrez’s crown of Bordeaux properties and he lavishes care, attention and financial investment to ensure that it produces wines of exceptional quality. In 1966, his father-in-law owned the property. This Grand Cru Classé Graves, which is generally 60% Cabernet, 40% Merlot, is characterised by smoky, tobacco aromas and a blackcurrant, spicy palate.

'I came to have this wine in my cellar by buying a job lot from a young couple who had just bought their first house. As they were about to sign on the dotted the line, the French owner decided he couldn’t possibly take his wine stocks with him to Australia and asked them to pay extra as if they were fixtures and fittings of the house. Not having any interest in wine, but desperate to have somewhere to live, they agreed but had no idea whether what they had bought (very cheaply as it happened) was worth anything – much of it was. Some first growths, some super seconds, some, like this one, great bottles of much older vintages. I relieved them of the wine and my bank account of its funds – they got a new bathroom out of the sale and I have enjoyed some delicious wine. Continuing to do good works, this cellar now has a chance to raise some money for Wine Relief through the sale of the Château Pape Clément 1966. The wine has been well stored, there is no ullage and it looks in tip top condition for a wine of this age. Please be generous!'
