Description

Admirably situated on the top of the Saint-Emilion plateau next to Pavie, Troplong Mondot and Trottevielle, the vineyards of Château Pavie-Macquin are planted with 70% merlot 25% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon.

This property is owned by Benoit and Bruno Corre, Marie-Jacques Charpentier and their children, all descended from Albert Macquin who was a pioneer of grafting vines onto American rootstocks after the devastating phylloxera epidemic of the late 19th century.

Improvements began in 1986 and have continued under Nicolas Thienpont who became winemaker in 1994, accompanied by Stephane Derenoncourt (already present since 1990).

2006
From a superbly situated on St.-Emilion's plateau, 38-acre vineyard planted on primarily limestone and clay, this 2006 is meant for long-term aging. A combination of 80% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it is a backward, brawny, muscular, long distance runner. Consumers lacking patience are advised to steer clear of this wine. Its dense purple color is followed by aromas of graphite, sweet cassis, pen ink, and charcoal. This powerful, dense, concentrated wine possesses high tannins and lots of structure. One of the more backward offerings from the right bank in 2006, it will not be close to drinkability for 8-10 years. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030

Score: 92+ Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (181), February 2009

2007
91 points Robert Parker: "This property never makes a very forward style of wine, and in the precocious, charming, upfront 2007 vintage, Pavie Macquin has fashioned an unexpectedly backward, powerful offering. Perhaps this vineyard’s character is due to the clay and limestone plateau on which the vineyard is planted...The wine reveals a dense blue/purple color in addition to a bouquet of burning embers intermixed with charcoal, graphite, blackberries, and cassis. Extracted, but not excessively so, and full-bodied, with lots of tannin and structure, this atypical 2007 requires 3-4 years of cellaring. It should evolve for 15 or more years." (04/10) 91 points Stephen Tanzer: "Good deep red-ruby. Black cherry, blackberry, licorice and spices on the nose, complicated by hints of dried fruits and dried herbs; exotic yet refined. Supple, suave and dry in a positive way, with an edge of acidity and underlying minerality firming the flavours of plum, spices and tobacco leaf. Finishes with sweet but firm tannins and excellent focus and lift..." 90 points and an Editors' Choice, Wine Enthusiast: "The wine has developed well, with plenty of weight, but the fruit seems a little diffuse, soft, open in character. It's masking the tannin core, a wine that opens slowly and carefully." (04/10) K&L's notes - Another winner at UGC. A bit reserved on nose, but tons of fruit on palate. Elegant and balanced. Very ripe tannins.
