Description

One bottle of this very highly rated second growth Pauillac. The aggregate critic scores for this wine is 92/100.

"Approaching full maturity, Pichon-Lalande's 1989 has a deep ruby/plum color with some lightening at the edge. The nose offers sweet plums and creme de cassis intermixed with vanilla and graphite. The wine is lush, medium to full-bodied, and layered with texture, low acidity, sweet tannin, and the hallmark purity and elegance this estate routinely produces. Some tannins remain, but this wine has reached its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for another 10-15 years. Anticipated maturity: Now-2017. Last tasted, 5/02.
Score: 93" (Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book (4), December 2003)

The following comes from a note of a vertical tasting by Antonio Galloni in October 2017:

"Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is arguably the single hottest château on Bordeaux’s Left Bank right now. Quality has been steadily on the rise for some time, culminating in a trio of spectacular wines in 2014, 2015 and 2016. This remarkable retrospective, many months in the making, provided a fascinating opportunity to explore the château’s rich history....

The Wines, Part Two: 1989-1921

The second part of this tasting kicks off with the 1989 Pichon Lalande. Off the charts aromatic intensity, silky tannins and exceptional finesse give the 1989 much of its considerable allure. Crushed flowers, sweet red fruit, tobacco, cedar and incense are some of the many notes that waft from the glass, but it is the wine’s textural finesse that elevates it into the realm of the profound. Wonderfully alive and delineated in every way, the 1989 is one of many highlights on this magical afternoon."

"Tasted at the Chapon Fin restaurant in Bordeaux. This is a far better bottle than the one encountered last year and bore semblances to my more positive encounters several years ago. Here, the 1989 has that lovely bouquet of black fruits, black tea and loam, that blossoms from the glass with continued aeration. The palate has very well balanced, the tannins having mellowed in recent years with tobacco and mushroom towards the finish. This just has much more vigour than I anticipated, much more cohesion. Very fine indeed. A point. Tasted September 2011.
Score: 92". (Neal Martin, RobertParker.com, March 2012).

A couple of Cellartracker notes:

"7/13/2019 - lesz wrote: 95 Points

Had with the 1982. Beautiful wine and compared very well with the 82 which was a Parker 100 point wine."

"7/13/2019 - Burgnick likes this wine: 93 Points

From a double magnum. Decanted upon arrival and served in a three hour dinner. Cedar, tobacco, leather and herbs. Very smoothe and precise. Tannins were resolved. It gained weight in the glass. Very nice. 93+"

Part of a full case, stored in its own wooden case since I bought it en primeur many years ago, in a dark proper underground cellar. The bottle on sale is the one shown in the photographs and the bottle, capsule and label are in really good condition as shown. The level is just into the neck.
