Description

I visited a quite few years ago and never really understood why wine from such an amazing location on gravel next to Mouton wasn't one of the greats. Well nowadays things have changed Pontet Canet seems to be the wine of the moment particularly in the USA.Having a vineyard myself I can understand the nerve and sheer amount of work that must be needed to farm biodynamically at a over 9000 vines per hectare. All winemakers quote the "great wines are made in the vineyard" mantra but this sort of dedication really proves the point.Their own tasting note says -

Very deep, almost opaque robe. Very intense, spicy, complex, refined nose, in which mingle red and black berry aromas (blackberries, cherries and Morello cherries) alongside liquorice, coffee and vanilla notes. On the palate the attack is full, then the wine develops both length and flavour. The silky tannin finish bears the inimitable hallmark of a great Pauillac. The palate aromas are very long. It is truly a very great wine.
Neal Martin on e Robert Parker gives it 93 points. I would say it will open up over the next two to three years and then go on for a decade or more. It won't be anywhere near as opulent as the 09 or 10 but if you're old fashioned like me you sometimes appreciate a but of balance.
