Description

You are bidding on a single bottle of Château Smith Haut Lafitte 75cl, 6 bottles acquired by me at £100 each in Nov 2020 from a celler in Bedfordshire. The Wine is ranked among the Crus Classés for red wine in the Classification of Graves wine of 1953 and 1959. The winery and vineyards are located south of the city of Bordeaux, in the commune of Martillac.

In 1970 they had 55 hectares of vineyards located on a gravel ridge to the east of Château Haut-Bailly. The red wine was a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (55%), Merlot (35%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). The grapes are fermented and then matured in oak barrels (50% new) for 15-18 months. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Back In 1970 the estate was owned by The Louis Eschenauer company who bought estate in 1958, after having already distributed the wine from the early 20th century and continued to look after it until it was sold to Daniel (former Olympic skiing champion) and wife Florence Cathiard the current owners in 1990. There has been a vineyard here Since the 14th century, the house of Verrier Du Boscq who planted vines on a gravelly plateau named Lafitte in 1365. In 1720, it was bought by the Scotsman Georges Smith who added his name to the lieu-dit (English: place-name), and who built the manor house of the property.

During the last decade it has become one of the leading estates in the Graves region. Daniel Cathiard has fully modernised the winemaking facilities and embarked on an investment programme, including the building of a new cellar. The proportion of new oak barrels used in the maturation process was increased and a trio of eminent oenologists (including the ubiquitous Michel Rolland) were hired as consultants. Challenging the likes of Haut Bailly, La Mission and even Haut Brion for supremacy in the Graves. Their 2009 received a perfect 100 points from Robert Parker and the 2010 & 2016 is even better. The style is pure seductive fruit and a silky texture; the quality is exceptional.

Today the 78 hectares of vines are harvested manually by more than a hundred pickers
