Description

Chateau Talbot 1989 Grand Cru Classe St Julien
Ref: 7968 From the famous Chateau Talbot vineyards, this wonderful red wine from the outstanding 1989 vintage scores 90/100 Parker points and "The 1989 Talbot may not be so backward and closed as the 1989 from its sister chateau, Gruaud-Larose, but it is a fascinating wine that resembles the 1982, although the '82 possessed more weight and extract. The 1989 is more elegant, with none of the exotic spice and meaty, leathery aromas of the 1982. Opaque black/ruby, with a huge bouquet of black fruits and spices, this highly extracted, medium to full-bodied wine is voluptuous on the palate, with a fine finish. Lower in acidity than the '82, but higher in tannin than the '86, the 1989 Talbot promises to drink well during its first decade of life, but keep for up to 20 years." Drink now - 2015.

CHATEAU LA SERRE

Just below you can see Luc d’Arfeuille, whose family has owned the property for 100 years. He and his wife are just wonderful people, with huge hearts, and their wine is one of the undiscovered treasures of the right bank. Their 17 acre vineyard is at the very top of St. Emilion, just outside the village, running onto southern slopes; “La Serre” means greenhouse, and references the fact that the vineyards see sun all day long. The vines sit on shallow clay soils above limestone – the road dividing two major vineyard parcels on Château La Serre is in fact blocked off, since there is an old limestone quarry below the vineyard and it’s dangerous for cars to drive over it.

La Serre’s neighbors include Pavie Macquin, Ausone, Trottevielle, and some vineyards used for Valandraud. La Serre is in other words in an incredible location, and is noteworthy for several reasons: the grapes achieve fantastic ripeness and as a result they see no need to green harvest and increase concentration; consequently the style is one of elegance over weight. Secondly, the wine offers tremendous quality for the money, it is one of the absolute little gems of Saint-Emilion.
