hâteau Trotanoy is a leading Pomerol estate, situated atop a high plateau neighbouring Château Pétrus.

Trotanoy’s wines can be every bit as dense, structured and profound as Pétrus, with distinct freshness and minerality that goes beyond the realms of most Merlot, from grapes grown on one of the earliest ripening sites in Pomerol.

Trotanoy’s eight hectares have been under the stewardship of Jean-Pierre Mouiex since the early 1950s. In the 18th century, Totanoy was called ‘Trop-Ennuie’ (lit. too annoying) due to its thick clay being so hard to work with.

But work hard the Girauld family did, thus placing the estate alongside the best of Pomerol, until it was split up in the late 19th century though the Napoleonic Law of Succession. But the family held on to the Totanoy parcel until after the First World War, when it transferred to the Peceresse family then the Moueix dynasty.

Today, Christian and Edouard Moueix manage Trotanoy. Christian is also in charge of the winemaking at Pétrus and there are many similarities in the vineyard management and winemaking between the two estates.
