Description

Robert Parker 87pts

1990: An amber/orange edge to the color suggests full maturity, and the aromas and flavors confirm it. The medium-bodied 1990 Calon Segur exhibits sweet cedar, currant, herb, plum, and kirsch notes along with a dusty earthiness. It lacks the concentration of the finest vintages from the mid-nineties as well as every top vintage from 2000 onward. No doubt high yields and a lack of a strict selection have resulted in a wine that has consistently been on a fast evolutionary track. There is a sensuality and sexiness to it because of its full maturity. Very pleasant at present, it needs to be drunk up over the next 4-5 years. Release price: ($310.00/case) Wine Advocate.June, 2009

Jancis Robinson 18.5

Mid-crimson with an evolved rim. Very very ripe and sweet and furry - as so often with 1990s, more expressive of the vintage than the property. Almost medicinal and mineral and with very attractive voluptuousness. Very sweet yet lively. Not enormous but beautifully balanced. At the end it is very slightly drying out which suggests it should be drunk sooner rather than later, but it's a lovely drink now.www.jancisrobinson.com, 09 Dec 2001

Wine Spectator Review:
Super. Dark ruby-red. Intense aromas of violets, liquorice, plums and berries. Full-bodied, with a thick, concentrated fruit structure and soft, velvety tannins. 1990 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2005.

Wine Advocate Review:
The dark ruby-coloured 1990, which already reveals some amber, offers a fragrant bouquet of spicy, oaky, cherry, and herb-like fruit. This is an admirably concentrated, surprisingly approachable, extremely well-balanced wine with outstanding depth and purity of fruit to its medium-bodied personality. Surprisingly, it is close

Other Notes:
This is certainly looking like a typical 1990 Left Bank. Dark brick core with tawny rim. Just a lovely nose that you could almost describe as half Saint Estephe and half Pomerol lovely gamey quality, savoury, hot bricks, leather, a touch of ginger. Great definition and developing more mocha scents with time in the glass. The palate is full-bodied, lovely balance with great acidity, a sensuous texture, seeming to have softened since the last time I had this, a couple of years ago. Slightly lower in acidity but maintaining great freshness. Develops a slight menthol character with an hour in the glass. This is a wine you want to relish unassuming and modest. A point. Drink now-2018. -Neal Martin, Wine Journal
