'Cheval de Andes is the Argentinian project from Saint-Emilion’s Château Cheval Blanc and Terrazas de los Andes. It celebrates the old clones of Malbec that were once found in Bordeaux but live on in Argentina. Pierre Lurton – CEO of Cheval Blanc – was visiting Argentina in the late 1990s when he had the chance to purchase a plot of ungrafted Malbec planted in 1929, an opportunity to produce a wine that had its roots in Bordeaux but could no longer be made there. He decided to work with Roberto de la Mota – the winemaker behind Terrazas de los Andes – to craft world-class wines that would prove the quality possible in Argentina.' Fine + Rare

'The 2005 vintage was characterized by low production and an excellent harvest for reds, in particular Malbec. A dry and cold winter was followed by a cool spring with regular flowering, despite an initial November frost affecting vineyards towards the south of Mendoza.

BLEND
Malbec (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon (26%), Merlot (7%), Petit Verdot (7%).

COLOUR
Deep, almost black core with bright violet highlights.

AROMAS
This wine opens with notes of fresh berries combined with blackcurrant and redcurrant, rose and violet, completed by hints of Asian spice such as fresh ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon.

PALATE
A sensual mouthfeel with great structure supported by soft and elegant tannins and subtle freshness. The increased proportion of Malbec in the blend ensures a great balance between the Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure and Malbec’s freshness.'

'The 2005 Cheval des Andes is made up of 60% Malbec, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and 7% Petit Verdot. Purple-colored, it exhibits a complex bouquet of wood smoke, scorched earth, violets, black cherry, and blackberry liqueur. On the palate it is remarkably elegant with a velvety texture, superb depth, savory flavors, ripe tannin, and 5-7 years of aging potential. Its drinking window will begin in 2014 and last through 2030 at the least. Cheval des Andes is owned by the legendary Saint-Emilion producer, Chateau Cheval Blanc. The wine is sourced from their 50 hectare estate vineyard planted on its own roots in 1929. The first vintage was 1999 and over time the wine has evolved into having a majority of Malbec in the blend. New oak is used for the Cabernet component and one-year-old barrels for the Malbec.
