Description

Fontodi is one of the very best Chianti producers, also making the world famous Flaccianello and Vigna del Sorbo. His Classico is one of the very best of its classification. The 2006 is drinking perfectly now and will last further; it was very structured in its youth; and the drinking window for the 09 from ERP below is a bit ambitious - this was a hotter year and I would say the 09 is also near its peak.

The Chianti Classico is typically one of the last Chiantis to be bottled, but the 2006 shows all the qualities I encountered when I tasted various lots earlier, prior to final assembly and bottling. It is a big, super-ripe Chianti that captures all of the best qualities of the vintage in its rich fruit and beautifully defined aromatics. This is a serious, structured Chianti that can be enjoyed now, but that also has the stuffing to age gracefully for years. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016.

The 2009 Chianti Classico is a model of elegance and class. Firm yet well-integrated tannins provide the backdrop for expressive red cherries, licorice, tobacco and spices. The 2009 radiates across the palate with notable class. It has great fruit and plenty of structure. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.
