Description

Two perfect bottles offered individually.

Feb 1995 Robert M. Parker, Jr. (88-91) Drink: 2000 - 2020
Now under new ownership, Gruaud-Larose appears to have emerged from the mini-slump or stylistic indecisiveness of the late eighties. It has returned to the blockbuster, super-extracted, savagely intense, full-bodied, tannic winemaking style that characterized this property's performances for most of this century. What is impressive about Gruaud-Larose's 1993 is its superb richness and wild blackberry, cassis character that resembles a blockbuster Syrah from the Hermitage hillsides. Certainly the samples I tasted were massive, full-bodied wines that will no doubt become more civilized with cellaring. One of the more burly wines of 1993, it will need to be cellared for 5-10 years. This bruiser is capable of lasting for 20-25 years.

Nov 2013 NEAL MARTIN 88
Tasted at the chateau at their --3-vertical. The harvest commenced on 28th September and the resulting blend consists of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Bright garnet in colour, the 1993 has a respectable if foursquare bouquet that has opened up since I last tasted it: blackberry, strawberry, a touch of vanilla and cedar with fine definition. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity and here the vintage begins to suppress this Saint Julien. The tannins are quite dry and tend to dominate the broody black fruit towards the abrupt, clipped full stop of a finish. It is a pleasant wine from a vintage that was too serious for its own good. Tasted April 2013.
