Two 2002's from my Wine Society Reserves, neither Chateau needs that much intoduction but extracts from the web to follow:

Château Lynch-Bages is a winery in the Pauillac appellation of the Bordeaux region of France. Château Lynch-Bages is also the name of the red wine produced by this property. The wine produced here was classified as one of eighteen Cinquièmes Crus in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.
The 90 hectares (220 acres) of Château Lynch Bages are located just outside of the town of Pauillac. The vineyard occupies a gravel ridge looking down over the Gironde estuary. The well-drained soil consists mainly of deep gravel beds over a limestone sub-strata, and it is planted predominantly with red wine grape varieties There is also a small approximately 4.5 hectare (11 acres) plot planted with white varieties (40% Semillon, 40% Sauvignon blanc and 20% Muscadelle) Château Lynch Bages is primarily known for its eponymous red wine. The malolactic fermentation takes place mainly in large stainless steel tanks, and the wine then spends about 15 months in oak barrels (of which some 50-60% are new) before bottling.

Aromas of currant bush, berries and sweet tobacco follow through to a full-bodied palate, with medium tannins and a long finish. Lovely texture to this wine. (JS, Web-2007)
Connoisseurs Guide
Long on woodsy, black coffee and toffee-like complexities from the very first sniff, this solid, richly oaked wine exhibits a foundation of berries and blackcurrant fruit that becomes a little more visible in the mouth than it is in the nose. Slightly supple in feel and fairly smooth in its overall construction, the wine is surprisingly approachable given its age and may prove to be at its best in only three or four years. (4/2005)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Fully saturated deep ruby. Enticing, slightly high-toned aromas of red cherry, menthol and spicecake pick up considerable depth with aeration. Turns a little austere in the mouth, showing a cooler, almost medicinal edge and a vegetal streak to the flavors of cherry, spices, coffee and herbs. Finishes peppery, clean and precise, with mounting, youthfully mouth-puckering tannins. Though this is hardly a blockbuster, it is turning out much better than the rainy growing season might have suggested. The 13.4% alcohol surprised me given the growth cycle in 2002, but the wine doesn't taste hot at all. A rather successful, well-done 2002 Bordeaux. (ID) (1/2012)


Château Léoville Barton is the smallest portion of the great Léoville estate and has been owned by the Barton family since 1826. There is no château and the wine is made at Langoa Barton. Léoville Barton's 48 hectares of vineyards are located in the east of the St-Julien wine appellation and lie on gravelly-clay soils. They are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon 72%, Merlot 20%, Cabernet Franc 8%. The wine is matured in oak barriques (50% new) for 18 months. Since Anthony Barton took over the reins from his Uncle Ronald in the mid 80s, quality has soared at Léoville Barton and the wine has gone from being a solid mid-league performing 2ème Cru Classé to one of the most exciting and scintillating wines in St. Julien. Léoville Barton is tannic and austere in youth but with time develops the classic cedary character that is the hallmark of St. Julien, along with intensely pure blackcurrant and cassis fruit notes. Léoville Barton's wines are made for extended cellaring and tend to show at their best with 10-15 years of bottle ageing.

Even better from bottle than from cask, and one of the finest wines of the vintage, this dense purple-colored 2002 reveals wonderfully sweet notes of charcoal, fresh mushrooms, smoke, earth, leather, cassis, and cedar.
Full-bodied, highly extracted, broodingly backward, dense, and deep, this impressively endowed offering is built for the long term. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028. One of the classic wines of Bordeaux and still realistically priced, Leoville-Barton is becoming increasingly popular because
of the extraordinary quality/price ratio it offers.
