"A great vintage. Monumental Sauternes following a long hot summer with some rain just before the harvest to flesh out the heat-concentrated grapes retaining their high sugar content."

Rieussec: "Two really lovely half-bottles in 1984 and 1985. Superb, with barley sugar nose, marvellously rich....Last tasted January 1990" ****

More recently:

"The ’59 Rieussec was an absolute ‘treat’. Unbelievably orange in colour (somewhere between Tizer and Irn-Bru we decided!) The nose was beautiful and fragrant, elegant and complex. The palate was very pure with lanolin sweetness and nice richness and amazing balancing acidity. Although it had just a hint of caramel it was nowhere as sweet as I’d expected. I was lucky enough to take the remains of the ’59 Rieussec home with me..... I didn’t get to the final third of a bottle until the Monday following the tasting (so it had been open for at least 48 hours) I feared that I had committed sacrilege, but if anything it was even better on the Monday evening than it was on the Saturday. This was one great bottle of Sauternes!"
