Description

Bodegas Roda are at the cutting edge of wine-making in Rioja. Mario Rotllant and his wife, Carmen Daurella, undertook an exhaustive analysis of many of the best vineyard sites in La Rioja Alta and picked 17 of the very best of these, with vines between 30 and 90 years old, and purchased signed long term contracts with the growers at these sites. Cirsion is the top wine from Roda and specially trained pickers are sent out round the vineyard to selectively pick only the best Tempranillo grapes. Roda practises sustainable viticulture and uses a minimum of chemicals or fertilisers. All their wines are aged 100% in French Oak. Cirsion has a deep, blackish purple colour. The nose has successive waves of very black fruit, damp earth, violets, chocolate and mint, eucalyptus and smokiness. Layers and layers of aromas and flavours linger in the mouth. It is very concentrated and has really good mouthfeel. There are notes of mature black fruits, plums, balsamic and even tapenade, mint and liquorice. “..one of the most modern and controversial of the ‘new wave’ wine makers in Rioja. It produces ‘high-expression’ wines from some of the best vineyards in the vicinity in a modern winery with all the latest kit, under the management of Riojano veteran Agustín Santolaya. The bodega’s flagship wine is called Cirsión and made from selected grapes from small, lowyielding plots. The result is a wine with positively explosive fruit and tremendous power.
