Description

A great opportunity to try properly stored, mature/maturing Chateauneuf du Pape from a top maker and compare two different contrasting vintages, both with high critic scores.

Perfectly stored in true underground cellar conditions, immaculate condition, fill levels to high neck.

Both originally supplied by The Wine Society and delivered directly to me from their reserves.

2012
Cellartrack scoring 93.2
Jancis Robinson: 19/20
The final blend of this wonderful wine will be 65% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 5% Syrah. Vincent has made a Syrah-dominant foudre and a Mourvèdre-dominant blend to show 'my clients' how much better the latter is than the former.
The Syrah does indeed rather suppress the delicacy and sweetness of Clos des Papes' Grenache which is so unlike most Châteauneuf – transparent and ethereal; only Ch Rayas regularly follows this style. Truly gorgeous and holds its (considerable: well over 15%) alcohol so well. (JR)

2013
Cellartrack scoring 91.8
Jancis Robinson: 19/20
For the first time since 2001, Vincent Avril assembled the wine before putting it into his precious foudres because the crop was so small. The resulting blend is 55% Grenache (as opposed to the more usual 65%), 30% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah (more than usual). After an extremely tricky year in the vineyard, the vinification was easy. Strict selection was needed because the vines were not in perfect shape.
I tasted wines from a range of foudres and found them truly beautiful. It was the energy that was so remarkable after notably meaty, savoury aromas. Muscular, absolutely not heavy on the Grenache, these wines were very different from usual. Very ripe and cool but not skinny. Lovely polish but not over ‘made’. Admirably supple and refined. Even elegant. He says ‘burgundian’ (his highest form of praise). The final alcohol level is only an estimation. (JR)
