1* Eight Iron Shiraz 2009
1* Fruit Bat Shiraz 2009
1* Little Venice Shiraz 2009

2009 The Eight Iron Single Vineyard Shiraz

The Story Behind The Name
This vineyard is located on the same property as the winery, restaurant and cellar door approximately 8km inland. It’s shaped like a golf club with the handle section on a south facing slope. It’s roughly as wide as a decent hit with a trusty eight iron, or quite possibly eight shots with an eight iron if you are an average golfer.

The Characteristics
The nose is generous with rich, dark fruits and spices of pepper and clove. There is a more subtle second layer of earth and a lifted violet character which provides an elegant balance to the powerful fruit. Opulent plum and redcurrant are powerful with great depth. The wine evolves with emerging characters of dark licorice and mocha and the floral notes from the nose manifest in the form of dried rose petals and lavender. The mineral element provides another layer with gravelly tannins pulling the wine into focus for a long savoury finish. The old vine pedigree is clearly on display in this wine, which is still very youthful. It will benefit from cellaring and decanting prior to serving is recommended.

2009 The Fruit Bat Single Vineyard Shiraz

The Story Behind The Name
An old shearing shed on the property is home to tiny fruit bats that live in the old hessian wool sacks. The vineyard is watched over by fourth generation winemaker Chester Osborn, depicted on the front label as a wild pixie hanging ‘bat-like’ from the distinctive red stripe.

The Characteristics
Plenty of lift on the nose, just like its neighbouring vineyard, Little Venice. It shows more white pepper and fennel, mulberries and plums too, mixed with a pinch of dried flowers.

A peppery fennel entry to the palate, very fresh and spicy, a touch of fresh black olives with juicy raspberries coming to mind as the most obvious fruit. The tannins are elegant, long and mineral. There’s a vibrancy here with moreish texture and fine balance.

2009 The Little Venice Single Vineyard Shiraz

The Story Behind The Name
Fourth generation winemaker Chester Osborn was in Venice when this block was purchased. The water underground the vineyard feeds a nearby spring, providing an abundance of water and inspiring the nickname ‘Little Venice’. There is a long history of providing nicknames to the vineyards that soon becomes part of the winery vernacular.

The Characteristics
The Little Venice Shiraz has a lifted nose; currants, plums and pepper with cedary spice all wrapped up in fresh potter’s clay. There are appealing notes of saline fruit, forest floor and truffles that bring complexity.

The palate starts with plenty of concentration and weight, then there’s a pile of red and dark currants and plums to bring freshness and vibrancy. The tannins are long and mineral laced, finishing with a twist of crushed ants, meatiness and mushrooms that are becoming the hallmarks of this vineyard. While restrained in youth, with bottle age it will open up to reveal more layered and complex secondary characters. With careful cellaring this wine will drink well until at least 2030.
