Description

Plenty of lift on the nose, just like its neighbouring vineyard, Little Venice. It shows more white pepper and fennel, mulberries and plums too, mixed with a pinch of dried flowers.

A peppery fennel entry to the palate, very fresh and spicy, a touch of fresh black olives with juicy raspberries coming to mind as the most obvious fruit. The tannins are elegant, long and mineral. There’s a vibrancy here with moreish texture and fine balance.

The Story Behind The Name
An old shearing shed on the property is home to tiny fruit bats that live in the old hessian wool sacks. The vineyard is watched over by fourth generation winemaker Chester Osborn, depicted on the front label as a wild pixie hanging ‘bat-like’ from the distinctive red stripe.

Scarce Earth Project

These grapes are sourced by Chester from individual plots throughout the McLaren Vale, and with small batch production, these guys will sit at the top of the d’Arenberg tree. Three of these wines (The Fruit Bat, The Little Venice and The Eight Iron) are part of a wider collection of wines known as the Scarce Earth Project.

This project includes 20 wines from various producers from across the McLaren Vale, and are created to highlight the different geological profiles that exist within the region.

91pts

March 2012 Deep garnet-purple colored, The Fruit Bat Shiraz has intense notes of warm plums, mulberries, dark chocolate and game plus a hint of baking spices and a whiff of prunes. Full bodied with a medium to firm level of chewy tannins, it has very good fruit concentration in the
mid-palate and a long finish with the spice notes pleasantly seasoning the dried fruits. Drink it 2013 to 2022+.
