Description

ABV 9.5%

This is a classic rich, flavoursome Australian style desert wine with this vintage in articular having an aperitif edge to it. The colour has a deep yellow-golden appearance and is intensely perfumed with sweet tropical fruit characters that saturate your senses. The aromatics are
dominated by white peach, nectarine juice and pear with citrus oil, pineapple cubes and passionfruit developing. The palate is lush, its mouth coating. There’s a huge array of exotic flavours such as nectarine
stones, white peach, pears, crème caramel, citrus peel, blood orange marmalade and passionfruit characters. The wine has superb fruit concentration and length and its overall balance is perfectly controlled and kept in check with a moderately low alcohol and fine lacy acidity. As mentioned the aperitif edge gives the wine further versatility in serving option with food but we suspect that it won’t take much encouragement to open another bottle….research only of course!

The Name
Early May 1985 saw d’Arenberg’s first ‘Noble’ attempt. The extraordinary coincidence of biological events and contradictions required to produce ‘Botrytis Cinerea’ mould occurred. A further two decades on, d’Arenberg has an enviable reputation for ‘sticky’ sweet dessert wines.

The Vintage
An excellent vintage for whites and Riesling was a highlight. A dry winter followed by heavy rains in spring resulted in vines with healthy, balanced canopies on most soils. A mild, early summer leading into a warmer period during veraison stopped vegetative growth allowing vines to channel energy into the fruit. Cooler conditions following veraison were ideal for whites producing very fragrant fruit with good acidity and long length. We left selected vineyard blocks in the hope that they would
naturally become infected with Botrytis Cinerea. Normally this occurs in the autumn months through March April and May but this year it occurred extremely early. As the grape skin is porous the grapes naturally dehydrated causing their sugar levels to increase to incredible levels. This is aided by the dew from cold, moist, autumn mornings follow by
the warmth of a sunny day which further increases the rate of dehydration until everything is pinkie-brown and gooey.
